Review: Pecking House Is One of New Yorks Top Hot Fried Chicken Spots Eater NY

Headlines flew about the then takeout and delivery-only spot’s weeks-long waitlist. Now, Huang and his business partner Maya Ferrante are poised to open Pecking House’s first permanent location this month. And it all took somewhere between overnight and a lifetime to execute. It has been his lifelong dream to create a restaurant that challenges preconceived Western notions about Chinese cuisine and embarked on this journey in the Spring of 2020. With his family’s restaurant, Peking House, shuttered due to the pandemic, he stepped in and started frying chicken and delivering it to New Yorkers trapped in their apartments, thus Pecking House was born. Pecking House became one of the pandemic’s most popular pop-ups with a waitlist of over 10,000 people.

For homeowners in Britain who wish to add or change the name of a property, the process is simple. The owner of a property that already has a name, rather than a number, can officially  change it by contacting the local council to request permission. If the new house name is deemed suitable and doesn’t duplicate an existing local name, the owner can pay a small fee to alter it, after which the change will be formally registered by Royal Mail. The owner of a house with a number cannot change or remove the number from the address, but can follow the same procedure to formally add a name to the property. Properties named The Manor House were found to command the highest price tag in England and Wales in a recent study by the property firm into premiums paid for particular house names, with an average sale price £1.42 million. Properties called The Manor or Manor House, by contrast, sold for an average of £967,117.

A 2019 poll by onthemarket.com found that Britons would pay up to £50,000 more for homes on streets with regally titled names, such as Royal, Palace, King or Queen. Similarly, a study by London estate agents Wetherell found that the most sought-after addresses can add up to 40% to the price of a home. In general, he added, a house that has a name might be expected to command a higher price tag than one with a number. But some of the findings suggest that house names also play a role in stimulating the imagination, painting a picture in the minds of buyers that might make a house appear particularly appealing. Many of the names on the list are linked to specific types of historic property, which tend to command high prices due to their age and size. Chick Chick on the UWS serves an entire menu dedicated to Korean fried chicken, and you should (in turn) dedicate yourself to their entire menu.

Ferrante attributes some of its early success to the dearth of exciting food experiences to be had during the early days of COVID. She says, “I was one of those people—like, I wasn’t like them [she’s a chef]—but I had an infant. When I ordered it, it was like, ‘this is the best thing I’ve eaten in a really, really long time.’ It was exciting.” Huang still boggles over Pecking House’s rocket rise. “I think it would take some distance to gain a perspective to see what was really going on. But, as you know, I never was in lockdown—I never once stopped working.” Huang suspects that the built-in exclusivity of the waitlist helped. “We were delivering a good meal with this fun story, and it felt like such a feat to have gotten a delivery at all.

Rowdy Rooster is an Indian takeout spot in the East Village with a great fried chicken sandwich and an even better vada pao. Eric Huang grew up in his family’s Chinese-American restaurant in Queens. An amateur cellist turned subpar college student turned chef, he decided to dedicate his career to restaurants despite crushing student debt.

Each bite starts with a crunch, then quickly yields to a level of juiciness that makes you wonder if Pecking was trying to mimic a Shanghainese soup dumpling. Sugar balances out the heat at first, until the seasonings build, making your lips tingle and stomach glow for a solid half hour. Think of the spice as an edible hand warmer for your insides. And for those who do takeout, note that the crunch factor is no less powerful three full hours after ordering, as long as you have a toaster oven nearby.

The tools and the space and the singular place will allow the restaurant to consistently supply what it’s known for and continue to grow. Overnight success is like a Broadway musical come to life. Somebody has such a great idea or invention or TikTok that the world can’t help but stand and applaud. It’s a lot of fun in one act, and it almost always misses the big picture.

What started as a delivery operation with weeks-long waiting lists now has a permanent home in Prospect Heights. Pecking House’s new counter-service location looks a bit like a small cafeteria at a trendy tech company, but it’s a perfectly fine place to consume large amounts of poultry. Your priority should be the chili fried chicken with thick, crunchy skin covered in a firecracker dry rub, which you can get in a huge sandwich or as a meal with sides.

A New Kind of Hot Chicken, from Pecking House

pecking house

Eric is now a fried chicken dealer, doing what he loves most, and serving it on paper plates. It’s going to be counter-service with takeout and delivery, but I don’t see this ever becoming a Chipotle or a Shake Shack. The space is a bit more polished and the food has a ton of thought and training behind it, even if it doesn’t look that way. For now, however, in this inflationary era, there’s something quite nice about two ex-fine-dining chefs keeping one of the city’s top fried chickens at $18 before tax and tip. You know where this is going; I’m rating Pecking’s chile and salted egg chickens a BUY.

Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: April 26

“Particularly in suburban settings, simply to have warranted a name is suggesting that it has perhaps a degree of standing that can in some circumstances add to its perception of desirability,” he said. The right house name may make a property more appealing to prospective buyers and even boost its market value, according to experts, which makes choosing the perfect moniker a bit of an art. Underdogs, the former home of Ozzy’s Apizza, has closed, which means the New Haven-inspired pizza pop-up has to find some new digs. Thankfully, owner Chris Wallace has already announced a new residency for Ozzy’s at Glenarden Club beginning July 26, serving Wednesday to Sunday from 5 p.m.

Peking House

The delivery-centric model necessitated a sturdy crust, a problem he solved by adding EverCrisp wheat dextrin into the batter. It worked, but the tougher reality was folks waiting eight weeks for fried chicken. Chef Eric Huang’s Pecking House, a movable feast that he describes as a crossover between American and Taiwanese fried chicken, seemed to hatch out of thin air in the pre-vaccine pandemic.

Cool Food Events and Pop-Ups to Check Out This Week in Los Angeles: April 26

I’d never had a Tsingtao at home but have rarely eaten in a Chinese restaurant without ordering one, if not two, especially to pair with anything spicy, its sweet, yeasty, almost creamy roundness cutting obligingly through heat. The pair is both grateful for those previous opportunities and for this new chance for Pecking House to be its own thing. The all-new and latest interpretation of Pecking House will open in the coming weeks on Flatbush Avenue at St. Marks where Park Slope and Prospect Heights meet. In addition to the fried fowl that made it famous, the counter service restaurant will expand its menu and include beer, wine (in cans or disposable cups) and possibly batched cocktails in the near future. And here Huang and Ferrante have the opportunity to create the destination they haven’t yet quite had. I was cooking this three piece-three side thing forever, and then I actually sat down and ate one around six months after we started.

Diners can also opt for a $17 three-piece with $2 green garlic ranch option. An almond panna cotta with peach and ginger is the only dessert pick and costs $8. The residency will run from July 19 to September 17 at 1644 Sawtelle Boulevard, Wednesday to Sunday from 12 p.m.

The Best (And Worst) Post-Pandemic Restaurant Revamps

pecking house

New York City’s ultra-popular chile fried chicken spot Pecking House, which once had a 10,000-person wait list, is coming to Sawtelle Japantown, opening for a summer residency at a space called Tuk Tuk x Turntable. Pecking House, the fried chicken pop-up that once had a waitlist just shy of 10,000 people, opens its permanent home at 244 Flatbush Avenue, on the corner of Saint Marks Avenue, on September 9. The Park Slope restaurant is the first from Eric Huang, a Taiwanese American chef who cut his teeth at Eleven Madison Park before launching the business out of his family’s restaurant in Fresh Meadows during the pandemic. “Kind of like the Bear,” he says, nodding to the hit Hulu television show with an uncanny resemblance to his own life. He’s been running the pop-up with Maya Ferrante, a former chef at the Michelin-starred Gramercy Tavern, where the pair met in 2015, and one of Pecking House’s earliest customers. Within ten weeks of operation, Pecking House had amassed a waitlist of 9,000.

Shirley Brasserie mostly retains the same interior as the Barish and serves a farm-to-table, California-inspired menu. The Barish opened in October 2020, just a few months after Silverton and her partner Michael Krikorian wrote a controversial op-ed for the LA Times about the George Floyd protests. The chicken sandwich is finished with a cabbage slaw, which gets charred on a grill, then marinated in Worcestershire sauce, fish sauce, and Tabasco.

Time Out says

You don’t go here for a birthday dinner; you go here for a 25-minute meal before you celebrate somewhere else. Pecking House is a practical, no reservations, pay-first-eat-later neighborhood restaurant where a full dinner — two pieces of chicken, a side, and a beer — runs $34 after tax and tip. At the month-old shop, which Huang runs with fellow Gramercy Tavern vet Maya Ferrante, folks can simply drop by and not have to wait long for food. The team has also expanded the lean pop-up menu with oyster mushroom po’boys (crispy and neutral) and vegan mapo tofu sandwiches (packed with stretchy, spiced yuba), and a pineapple slicked chicken sandwich (skip it).

There’s a Midnight Pasta Party This Weekend

Over the past decade, he has been cooking in the kitchens of many New York Michelin-starred institutions such as Cafe Boulud, Gramercy Tavern and most recently as a sous chef at Eleven Madison Park. One of New York’s best fried chicken restaurants is serving its famous chili fried chicken along Sawtelle for a limited time only. Huang spent time in the kitchens of Café Boulud and Gramercy Tavern before earning the title of sous-chef at Eleven Madison Park; last year, he left, with plans to open a Michelin-star-worthy restaurant of his own. In the early months of the pandemic, he helped his mother, who owns a restaurant on Long Island, as she adapted her business.

He’s noisily dissecting a whole chicken into nine parts in the background of our call. A few minutes later, he’s interrupted by one that starts to sizzle in the fryer. National poultry prices have shot up over 17 percent since this time last year (egg prices are up 30 percent), a fact that partly explains why chicken, once a frugal option, now runs $40 plus at full-service restaurants. The cost will surely go up here too at some point, which is not necessarily a bad thing since excellent crispy birds have long occupied a lower pricing tier than even mediocre roast counterparts. Pecking House is the opposite of a vibe-y 2022 restaurant, a place where people drink Long Island Ice teas priced like porterhouses and take selfies in bathrooms equipped with fog machines. The lighting here is as sexy as in a Metro-North rail car.

Order at the cashier, grab a (backless) bar stool and wait for a server to bring out Huang and Ferrante’s “naked” fried chicken, dusted with salt, five spice, and vinegar powder. Sounds good in theory, but the execution wasn’t there recently. The salted egg yolk chicken was better, where the ultra-rich and grainy condiment, sporting just a touch of sulfurous musk, enrobes a supremely juicy bird. This story has everything, starting with Chef Eric Huang, who came to cooking as the scion of a New York-based, Taiwanese-American restaurant family.

Since the temperatures in Mexico are typically pleasant year round -- except for the summer months where they can reach the 90s and higher -- you'll want to pack breathable, hot weather clothing. Be sure to also bring bathing suits and shoes that you don't mind getting wet if you plan on partaking in any water activities. You must have a passport to travel on a cruise to or within Mexico.

The best time to cruise to Mexico — including the Mexican Riviera — is from November through January, when it's less crowded and skies aren't as rainy and temperatures are still warm. There is no luggage storage available at the terminal, but you can arrange with Carnival head of time to check your baggage onto the ship early. Any carry-ons you have will need to stay with you until you board. At the terminal entrance there will be porters available to help you with your luggage and will direct you to the parking garage. Again, if you’re travelling alone, this isn’t that bad, as you will only be paying about $47-$60 roundtrip. You’d be looking at paying roughly $188-$240 round trip, just for shuttle service.

However, patrons should be aware that there are height restrictions, so RVs and other taller vehicles may need to use alternative parking arrangements. If you’re coming from Long Beach Airport, you’ll be charged a flat rate of $45 to the cruise terminal. Other travel options from either LAX or Long Beach airport are shuttles, private car service, Uber or Lyft, or getting a taxi. Long Beach Transit offers bus service from LGB to downtown Long Beach.

Parking is available onsite at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal (click here for details), but there are many Long Beach hotels with Park and Cruise packages.

It’s Carnival’s primary port on the Pacific Coast and sees nearly 300 cruises departing from it each year. If you’re taking a cruise in the Pacific, odds are very good that you’ll be leaving from Long Beach. The Long Beach Cruise Terminal is located 23 miles from Los Angeles International Airport. Parking is available at a rate of $23.00 per day in the parking garage. A multi-story parking garage is available onsite which offers covered parking spaces.

Norwegian Gem Itinerary, Current Position, Ship Review

norwegian gem cruise line

They don’t come with a lot of blue cheese or celery, so if that’s important to you, make sure to ask for extra. Day or night, you’ll find something to chow down on here. Want to stuff the cheesecake you brought back from dinner into the fridge?

Dining

Play a quick sports game on the basketball, volleyball or tennis court. If you’re looking for daytime entertainment, though, or activities that’ll get your blood pumping, you’ll find plenty of that as well. But above and beyond all this, there are also additional Norwegian Gem Haven staterooms. The Haven is like Norwegian Cruise Line’s VIP area and you’ll find Havens across many of the other ships in Norwegian’s fleet. Norwegian Gem, when it debuted in 2007, was the second-to-last Jewel-class ship for Norwegian Cruise Line, followed the next year by Norwegian Jade.

From what deck does one disembark for tendering?

Topsiders and Bahi Hai are both located near the pool deck and have outdoor seating, as does The Great Outdoors. One of my favorites is the Star Bar, found just off Cagney's Steakhouse. You'll enjoy every inch of these staterooms, with enough space to sleep up to four guests.

Spa & Fitness

Up to six guests can enjoy these Villas that are perfect if you want to bring the kids. They have one bedroom with a queen-size bed and a luxury bath and shower, as well as a separate childrens bedroom. Also features a living area, dining area and private balcony. These Mini-Suites sleep up to four guests, making them ideal if you want to bring the kids.

Sleeps up to four and guests receive access to the private courtyard area. Up to three guests can stay in these Oceanview Staterooms.

Shop from a variety of souvenirs, cosmetics, clothing, snacks and sundry items. Treat yourself at our duty free shops full of fantastic savings on fine jewelry, accessories, perfume, liquor and tobacco. Experience stylish decor in a comfortable oceanview stateroom. All come with nice, smart touches enhanced by a large picture window with clear views of the sea. Norwegian Gem is a Jewel-class cruise ship of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). She is the final cruise ship of the Jewel class and was built by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft.

Join the party at the liveliest nightspots on the ship, Bliss Ultra Lounge & Night Club, which features a stylish bar area and swanky lounge. In addition to all the suites, the Norwegian Gem has a standard balcony, ocean view, and interior cabins for those watching their budgets. Most of the interior public areas of the Norwegian Gem are modern and contemporary. NCL has added a two-deck high definition projection screen, which can show movies and popular sporting events (like bowl games), or be used to play Nintendo Wii games. Even if you don't play the Wii games, it's fun to watch your fellow passengers!

Stylish and sophisticated appointments enhance these modern rooms. Located at the top of the ship, The Haven features the most luxurious, well-appointed accommodations on board. Enjoy 24-hour butler service, concierge service and private sundeck.

Decks and Cabins

These Norwegian Gem mid-ship staterooms sleep up to four guests and come with two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed, one pullman and one single sofabed. Also includes a sitting area and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a private balcony with a great view. Because they are mid-ship, you'll have easy access to everything on board. This sparkling cruise ship is the perfect choice for year-round cruises in style.

But, proving that good things come in small packages (if one can consider a 94,000-ton steel hull “small”), there’s a whole lot to explore here. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. Rates are in USD and valid for US and Canadian residents only.

Kids on the Norwegian Gem even have their own dining area, with smaller tables and chairs, at the Kid's Cafe. This Asian restaurant might be one of the best-kept secrets on the Gem. Although listed on the Freestyle Daily as a “specialty restaurant,” there’s not actually a charge to dine here. Want to celebrate your anniversary at Le Bistro, the French restaurant aboard Norwegian Gem?

The two lower beds can be converted into a queen-size bed and the convertible sofa pulls out to sleep two more. You'll also have a sitting area and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a private balcony. Because these are aft-facing, the view from your balcony is amazing and truly unforgettable.

Think of it as your travel companion, helping you experience an unforgettable cruise vacation every step of the way. Learn about the latest ships and destinations by browsing hundreds of questions (and the answers to those questions) posted by real cruisers. If you happen not to find what you’re looking for, you can even post a question of your own. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to your very own private balcony.

No matter what you choose, our specialty dining options feature the tastes you’ll crave. With room for up to four guests, these Inside Staterooms come with two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed and additional bedding to accommodate up to two more guests. These staterooms are mid-ship, so you'll have easy access to everything on board. But while this size may seem small to some seasoned cruisers, it’s worth noting just how enjoyable a cruise on a mid-sized ship can be.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Enjoy Norwegian Cruise Line's onboard entertainment, including Broadway productions, comedy clubs, dueling pianos and much more. A fitness center is open from early morning to late at night on Deck 12, with fitness and aerobics classes offered daily, alongside a full gym outfitted with all your favorite workout equipment.

And if you want to end your cruise with a meal at the line’s signature steakhouse, definitely make that Cagney’s reservation, because the final night of every cruise is a tough ticket in the popular eatery. If you don’t make a reservation before your cruise, I would definitely do it on embarkation day. Yes, Norwegian Cruise Line invented the concept of Freestyle Dining, but it’s still worth taking the time to make a few reservations for specialty dining. We’ve been on ships where once the buffet shuts down, your foot options are pretty limited — and become non-existent after about midnight. But on the Norwegian Gem, you can grab a bite to eat 24 hours a day (and without paying the $7.95-per-order room service charge!). A Sail Away Inside stateroom guarantees an Inside stateroom or better!

Top 10 Royal Caribbean International Cuba Cruises

This family-favorite ship takes you to some of the coolest destinations in the tropics. In between isles, make every day onboard unforgettable with delicious dining, jaw-dropping entertainment, adrenaline-amping rides and supercharged slides — like the The Perfect Storm. The Adonia's salt-water swimming pool was extremely refreshing after a long, hot day of touring, offering a shallow seating area around the edges and four feet to cool off in. I chose to have breakfast, lunch and all but two dinners at the buffet, since I was able to enjoy my meal outside instead of being stuck inside in one of the inside restaurants — there's nothing like that sea breeze!

We were able to hear some great rumba and mambo music on deck and in the Curzon Lounge at night, which helped make our time at sea feel more authentic. My room also came with a coffee/tea machine, and a few Larabar gluten-free fruit and nut energy bars. Not everything was free though — there were four large 1.5-liter water bottles on the desk for $3.25 each or $9.75 for all four. I knew not to drink the water in Cuba and purchased all four so I could carry one around each day we left the ship.

Beginning with the new Armonia sailings from Miami, Cuba will be open to Americans onboard MSC Cruises, following people-to-people requirements. On MSC Opera the company offers a wide range of shore excursions, including beach days and snorkeling without people-to-people requirements. On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately.

These cruises are selling out fast, get them while you can. Yes, Virgin is courting an American audience; compliant shore experiences are in development; details will be made available later in 2019. Pearl Mist's program follows people-to-people regulations. The company says that Americans can come if they can procure their own visas.

I put my bags through the security machine, handed over my passport and answered some questions about my trip, which took no time at all. During the last two days of our cruise, there were an increasing number of gastroenteritis cases on the ship that were possibly connected to Norovirus. I really enjoyed rocking out to live music by the Craze Band, a British group that lives aboard the Adonia and plays oldies rock and roll music at night as well as Latin music during deck parties as we pulled into or out of each port. Reservations weren't required at the Pacific Restaurant — it was so packed the first night I was handed a pager that finally went off 35 minutes later when my table was ready — so for sake of convenience, I ate most of my meals at the buffet. It was fun meeting up with new friends on our own time for meals without having to sit through a 60- or 90-minute long dinner and risk missing out on any of the nightly onboard activities. It’s time for the time of your life — multiple times a day.

Break up with your weekly routine with a weekend cruise from Miami and set sail on a memory filled getaway that’ll take you so much further than a standard staycation. Cruising to Cuba has undergone great changes in just a few years. American cruise ships, which began visiting the Caribbean's largest island in 2016, keep adding more and more sailings, as regulations fall away.

On May 22, 2018, Global Ports Holding (Turkey) signed a 15-year deal (until 2033) with Aries SA (Cuba) for the management of cruise port Havana. By the agreement will be made significant investments in the port's infrastructure and facilities, including a capacity increase (expansion) from the current 2 berths (terminals) to 6 berths (by the year 2024). The Turkish company manages 13 cruise ports plus 2 cargo ports in 7 countries. We were assigned certain times to leave the ship so disembarkation could be done in an orderly manner. I must have been one of the last people off the ship because the cruise terminal was pretty empty.

Of course, this ain’t your typical sun-and-surf Caribbean cruise (although it’s got plenty of that, too). Maybe you’ve got your heart set on history-rich Havana (it turns 500 years old in 2019), with its time-warp 1950s classic cars, crumbling colonial buildings, and storied night spots (such as the Tropicana or Buena Vista Social Club). Or perhaps you want to see the country’s second-largest city and Cuban Revolution–cradle at Santiago de Cuba or visit Cienfuegos, with its UNESCO-protected city center. Both Azamara ships comply with people-to-people regulations through for-fee shore excursions.

Luxe the day away in an Overwater Cabana at Coco Beach Club®.Or crank up the party at Hideaway Beach℠, the ultimate adults-only beachfront paradise. And refuel over foodie finds from signature wings to all-you-can-eat island favorites. Currently, the only thing stopping a U.S. mainstream cruise line from visiting Cuba is the country itself; there are no U.S. government regulations forbidding cruise ships from going, thanks to measures taken by the Obama administration.
