Though the criteria, rules, and results have changed the event is still a fan favorite and we hope this page is informative. Prior to the 1985 All-Star Game being played, a new tradition was born when Major League Baseball adopted an official format for a Home Run Derby. Though these types of contests had taken place before, this was the first time it was going to be acknowledged by the League.

The top seed from each league will face the winner from his league's Round 2 matchup. The winners from the Round 2 matchups will advance to Round 3 . The two participants advancing from Round 1 for each league will compete against each other (AL 2 vs. AL 3/NL 2 vs. NL 3). The next two participants with the most home runs from each league (AL 2, AL 3/NL 2, NL 3) advance to Round 2. If two or more players are tied for advancement into the next round or for the championship, each player will receive three swings to hit as many home runs as possible. If they are still tied after three swings, they will each take one swing. This process is repeated if necessary until one player wins the swing-off. A total of thirty-six races, with the first coming last year, gave Derby starters an opportunity to accumulate points towards an entry into the race. Twenty horses qualified for the Kentucky Derby with two other horses listed as "also eligible" in case one of the starters would be scratched prior to the opening of betting.

Harper, who hit 16 homers in the first two rounds, led off the final round. The 20-year-old, who was receiving pitches from his father Ron Harper, went deep on the first three swings of the final round. Harper finished the round with eight homers, his third straight round with exactly eight home runs. Céspedes hit 32 total home runs and won the competition by defeating Harper in the final round. Céspedes was the first winner of the event who had not been selected to that year's All-Star Game. Griffey went for a three-peat in Atlanta's Turner Field in 2000, but was out-hit by Chicago's Sammy Sosa, who established a record by hitting nine home runs in the final round.

This order will continue for hitters Nos. 2-5 for each league, with the NL going first, followed by the AL. A new format is being introduced for the 20th annual Gillette Home Run Derby at Target Field in Minneapolis. Ten players will compete in the event on July 14 at Target Field, five from the American League and five from the National League.

Unfortunately, those underwhelming strikes piled up for more than a few players involved in the Home Run Derby.
